It may be the last day of 2013, but Ryan’s Class 5A Division II semifinal against Keller Fossil Ridge will be remembered by many long after another year ticks off the calendar.
If you were at this game – and didn’t leave after halftime – then you witnessed the best game in 2013.
For the last four days, I’ve counted down the top five contests of 2013. We’ve had great state championship games, thrilling playoff contests and crosstown rivalries, but nothing could top Ryan and Fossil Ridge’s unforgettable game.

For a while, it didn’t look like the Class 4A Division I state semifinal between Guyer and Highland Park was going to be very exciting. In fact, Guyer’s chances of repeating as state champions looked pretty bleak as the two teams entered the fourth quarter at Allen’s Eagle Stadium.
But Guyer has a knack for playing in thrilling state semifinal games. The Wildcats’ came up with a huge fourth-quarter comeback win over the Scots, and that contest checks in as the No. 3 game of 2013.

My ears were ringing all night from all the crowd noise that was relentless all night, much like the play of two of the state’s best volleyball teams. Let’s relieve one of the best matches you’ll see and one of the year’s top games.
