Guyer quarterback J.W. Walsh had plenty of good games in 2008, but it was his only loss as the team's starter that made the biggest impression on us. On the biggest possible stage, which was at the time supposed to be the final high school game in the history of Texas Stadium, in Class 4A Division I state semifinal, Walsh was virtually flawless. Guyer lost to Longview, 41-30, after entering the fourth quarter with a lead, but Walsh had career-high numbers in both passing and rushing. He finished the night with 273 yards passing, completing 19 of 28 passes for two scores. He also rushed for 143 yards despite battling leg cramps and led the Wildcats to 501 yards of total offense. This from Matthew Muench, who's still on vacation... No. 3 This game had a ton of story lines. Father Doug Boxell was facing son Lance Boxell for the first time head to head. Doug's Ponder team was the defending state champion and entered the game on a 51-game winning streak. But Lance and the Krum Bobcats did the unthinkable. They beat the Lions, 63-61, at home in arguably the best basketball game in the area in the 2008-09 season. During the game Krum erased a double-digit halftime deficit by outscoring rival Ponder 21-6 in the third quarter. Krum never trailed in the fourth quarter thanks to the play of Klay Dodd who netted 21 points, 14 in the second half. -- Matthew Muench The entry "COUNTDOWN: Top 5 games of 08-09 school year (No. 3)" has no entry tags. |
