Who had the better year in sports -- Ryan or Guyer?

Now that the 2008-09 school year is over for Ryan and Guyer, I got to thinking: which school had the better year in sports?

Guyer had a better early fall with the football and volleyball teams, Ryan dominated in basketball and baseball/softball was a push. While those generalizations are all well and good, I want to split the hairs and quantify successes and failures to see which school had the better year across the board.

So I've come up with a system to award teams points for each success throughout the season. I'll add up the points at the end, and whichever team has more had the better year. Disclaimer: This is absolutely not perfect. I know it is not perfect. I have not done the math before writing this, so I have not schmoozed the formula to benefit one school over another.

OK, here's the gist of the formula. If a team makes the playoffs, I'm awarding it three points. To me, making the playoffs validates you as a good team, so making the playoffs gives you the most points. I'm giving two bonus points for a district title, and one point for every playoff game/series win. No Ryan or Guyer team won state, so we don't have to worry about that.

Track is hard to judge because it's such an individual's sport, but I wanted to give credit to having a good track program. So I'm giving a top 3 finish at district three points, and a district title two points. I'm omitting tennis and golf, because that gets even hairier.

Also, I'm giving one point for a head-to-head win.

Let's get to it! Again, I have not done the math so I have no idea how this is going to come out. My guess is it's going to be pretty darn close. Guyer will take an early lead, Ryan will close the gap with basketball, soccer will ultimately be a push, and baseball/softball will be pretty much even. It may come down to track.

Football
Ryan: three points for the playoffs, two points for two playoff wins - 5 points
Guyer: three points for the playoffs, four points for four playoffs wins, one points for beating Ryan - 8 points

Volleyball
Ryan: three points for the playoffs, one point for beating Guyer - 4 points (Ryan has 9 total)
Guyer: three points for the playoffs, two points for winning district, one point for beating Ryan, one point for one playoff win - 7 points (Guyer has 15 total)

Boys basketball
Ryan: three points for the playoffs, two points for winning district, two points for beating Guyer twice, one point for one playoff win - 8 points (17 total)
Guyer: three points for the playoffs - 3 points (18 total)

Girls basketball
Ryan: three points for the playoffs, two points for beating Guyer twice, one point for one playoff win - 6 points (23 total)
Guyer: 0 points (18 total)

Boys soccer
Ryan: three points for the playoffs, two points for two playoff wins - 5 points (28 total)
Guyer: three points for the playoffs, two points for winning district, two points for beating Ryan twice, three points for three playoff wins - 10 points (28 total)

Girls soccer
Ryan: three points for the playoffs, two points for winning district, two points for beating Guyer twice, four points for four playoff wins - 11 points (39 total)
Guyer: three points for the playoffs, two points for two playoff wins - 5 points (33 total)

Baseball
Ryan: three points for the playoffs, two points for winning district, one point for beating Guyer, one point for one playoff win - 7 points (46 total)
Guyer: three points for the playoffs, two points for winning district, one point for beating Ryan, two points for two playoff wins - 8 points (41 total)

Softball
Ryan: three points for the playoffs, two points for winning district, one point for beating Guyer - 6 points (52 total)
Guyer: three points for the playoffs, two points for winning district, one point for beating Ryan - 6 points (47 total)

Track
Ryan: three points for boys' top three finish - 3 points (55 total)
Guyer: three points for boys' top 3 finish, two points for boys district title, three points for girls' top 3 finish, two points for girls' district title - 10 points (57 total)

There you have it: Guyer 57, Ryan 55.

Here's how I interpret this: the two schools were even. This was fun to go through, but there's no way to accurately quantify this. The formula is admittedly flawed. For example, Ryan girls track was awarded no points, but Lindsey Hinton had two gold medals at district. Is that fair? Probably not, but it gets really messy when we start adding individual medalists at track, golf and tennis.

So the fact that it was that close tells me that this was a dead heat, both programs are outstanding, and it should be fun to watch these rivalries continue to blossom in 2009-10.

what about DHS?? our football and baseball team were great!!

Just wait for the DMS HS All Sports trophy standings, they break it down by district.

what about golf, swimming, etc.... shouldn't these sports be included? and i agree with catdad just wait for the DMS standings, they take into account all sports

Billy, using Jeff's formula, a grand total of 3 vs both Ryan and Guyer.
