Here's a little story I'd like to tell about a sports writer and some football coaches. I hear someone shout my name and walk into the Guyer football coaches' office on Wednesday afternoon to be greeted with the always-awkward question, "So Adam, who'd you pick this week? (talking about the Guyer-Stephenville game, of course" Guyer had won two games in a little more than two seasons. Stephenville has four state championships in the last 15 years and has some ridiculous playoff streak. But it wasn't all just tradition. Just two weeks ago, the Yellow Jackets were ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press Class 4A poll. And the game was at Stephenville, a tough place to play. The answer was easy. "Stephenville," I said with nervous laughter. Unnamed assistant coach said, "We're gonna shock the [bleep] out of them." That just drew more nervous laughter from me. I mean, come on, let's get real. Then the coach went on to explain how the teams matched up very well -- both really big and physical. Then head coach John Walsh told me the same thing, and I sort of started believing it. Then defensive tackle Spencer Wilson said he was ready to hit them in the mouth and let them know who Guyer is. It was a great quote, but I kind of laughed under my breath, I admit. Boy, was I proven wrong. Due to a last-minute scheduling snafu, I was switched to Lake Dallas-Red Oak, which was also a great game, but I'm pretty upset I had to miss this. Apparently, Guyer's defense played out of its mind and lived up to what we'd been hearing about in the summer with its improvements. The most fascinating part of this was that they did it without starting quarterback J.W. Walsh, who will be out about six weeks with an elbow injury. Backup quarterback Marquis Smith, who'd seen very limited action last year did an admirable job of running the offense, though he had to have been nervous as hell. Once again, Guyer played sloppily at times and still came away with a win -- but this time it was against a marquee opponent, and even more impressive, it came on the road. It's not often you fumble the ball five times and win a game, but the Wildcats managed to do it. I'm looking forward to see what they can do when they play a flawless game. Congratulations to the Wildcats for what could end up being a program-changing win. What do you guys think that were there? Was the win at all fluky or is this team as good as it appears it might be. How will they fare next against Saginaw? |

Adam, it was incrediable! You know that I tried to text you as fast as it all happened...both teams had great opportunties, but we were persistant! Persistance and confidence e big factors for the Wildcats. The persistance has been there for 3 years of hard work, sweat and the coaches/players NEVER losing faith in the fact that one day it would all start to pay off! That day has arrived along with a lil' confidence. And here we are...

Hey…. You need to get on the Guyer Wildcats bandwagon….. This team is a team to be reckoned with… they are better than last year (1-9) our DL is getting better and better as each game passes. LB is able to get to the opposing QB… (Making a safety against Stephenville) We have a young OL and they are learning to protect the QB. RB’s are looking good. WR’s are making big plays. If you wasn’t there in Stephenville, I’ll just say YOU MISSED A VERY GOOD GAME, was it by chance they won... NO WAY!!! These guys are GOOD. I have been at each and every game Home or Away. Theses guys are getting better….. So far UNDEFETED…..GO WILDCATS…..The Fans are getting Louder Hey….There’s room on this bandwagon……ALL ABOARD……#1 Guyer Fan

Raiderdad, it's a little early in the day and week to be drinking as heavily as you must be. If nothing else, we still have DHS on the schedule.

The fans lined up at the fence because they couldn't get on the field and the players going by and high fiving with HUGE smiles. It was one of those moments you want to remember. After 3 years of hard work and determination, the players and coaches deserved that win. It's the beginning of a great football program and a lot of fun.

RaiderDAD, looking at your schedule, it looks weak until the last game of the year (against GUYER)....9-1 is not a bad season, but the 1 lost is against the wildcats

Its a great win for the program but its still early to tell if Guyer is good enough to stake a real claim in a very talanted district. Neither of the teams they've beat so far this year have won a game so its still a little early. But a win is a win and against Stephenville is a big win for the program to work off of.

I have to share a funny thing I heard. On the way home I listed to the Stephenville call in show. A fan was saying that Guyer only beat them cause they have over 2000 students. The announcer said, true, but they players making most of the plays on the filed tonight were Juniors. The guy replied, well that really sucks for us then and he hung up. The announcer must have been laughing for 10 minutes.

People need to get off the enrollment figures. A good team is a good team. We have one of the lowest enrollements in the district at Rider. Congratulations to Guyer on a great win. Go out and spank Lake Dallas so they will shut up.

Enrollment figures, well are for real that why they have 6 classes in the UIL. The more studends the more players the more players the more talent the more talent the more wins. Yes some schools have more spirt and pride so they get more kids out with less enrollment but its the exception not the rule. Do you think the best 2A school can beat the best 5A school, enrollment figures have a part in success !

We are not talking about different UIL classifications. Who said anything about 2A and 5A? You are reading way to much into this. We are talking about District 5-4A. So according to you "footballfan", Guyer should win district because they have the highest student enrollement. "Wow", I guess Rider should just pack it in. With our puny enrollment how are we ever to compete?
Posted by Wildcat Dad @ 4:31 PM Tue, Sep 09, 2008
Rider-Falls, we will agree to let you pack it in!!

Congratulations on beating Stephenville. A quality win over a quality opponent. A few people must of screwed up scheduling the Cats for their Homecoming Game! Keep winning Guyer I like to brag about how good our district is. How about a three team Denton sweep Friday night!!!

The Colony has the highest enrollment and LD the smallest. Since The Colony has the highest enrollment, that means they have the largest talent pool. LD has the smallest enrollment, that means they have the smallest talent pool. What they do with the talent pool or if they win who knows, but the fact that they have more to choose or less to choose from is still a fact, so enrolment figures do make a difference. Thats why the UIL has 6 classes, its enrollment. Rider has a good team we hear but Guyer has more talent to choose from, they a larger enrollment !

Your arguement has no validity! Out of 32 districts in 4A guess how many schools with the biggest school enrollement are picked to win district? "3" Thats right 3. So that means the district champion out of the other 29 districts will be a school with a smaller enrollemnt. Bigger schools do not always have more talent. If this were true then Dallas Sunset with 2247 students in 9-5A would have more talent the Defending State Champs 4A Lake Travis with 1751 students who by the way thumped 5A Austin Weslake this year.
