Guyer defense for real?

We've heard throughout the summer that Guyer's defense would be much improved this season, especially in the secondary.

Before we address any of this, let's keep in mind that Carrollton Newman Smith is no offensive juggernaut, having gone 1-9 last season in 5A, just as Guyer did in 4A last year as a newer program.

After giving up just one offensive touchdown to the Trojans on Thursday, the Wildcats have reason to be excited about their defense.

I'm not going to highlight every single player on the defense, though the entire unit played well and swarmed to the ball well, but here are a few people/units that stood out on Thursday.

1. Taylor Bible - This guy has been advertised as the next big thing ALL summer, and he made his coaches and proponents look smart on Thursday. The big defensive tackle was all over the field on Thursday and caused some big problems for the Trojans after settling in after a couple of big runs early on. He will be a good one.

2. Cody Marley - The senior linebacker has been starting his sophomore year and has bulked up this season. He's a very emotional player, who had a couple of stupid plays, including one that he got flagged 15 yards for. I think that had more to do with the opening-game jitters and emotion than anything. Marley was a beast for most of the game and a had a couple of big tackles in the backfield, including one on a key goal-line stand.

3. Ravion Ingram - An outside linebacker, Ingram was a big player in this summer's 7-on-7 play and had a couple of huge plays on Thursday. The biggest came on 4th-and-goal from the one-inch line when he stuffed Trojan QB Aldo Quiroga for a three-yard loss to keep the Trojans off the scoreboard. He also had a near-interception on a tipped ball.

4. The entire secondary - Like I said above, Newman Smith isn't much of a measuring stick, but you can only play that week's opponent, and these guys did it well. Safety Antonio Burton showed a keen nose for the ball, and cornerback Josh Stewart, who's about 5-7, 150 soaking wet, is pretty incredible to watch. He's not afraid of anyone and he gets right in the action and does more than hold his own. Keep your eye out for him, he's impossible to miss.

Of course, a much greater test will come this weekend at Stephenville against a state-ranked team with great tradition. I have a feeling the Yellow Jackets' offensive output will be a bit different than Newman Smith's, but that's why they play the games.

As of 9:25, I've realized I left out two key players from Guyer's defensive effort on Friday night -- tackle Spencer Wilson and end Garrett Talburt.

Along with Bible and Robert Satterfield, the Guyer line was all over the place on Friday, mainly Wilson and Talburt. I just wanted to be sure those two didn't go unnoticed.

Sorry but Marley did not impress in the season opener. He wiffed on several tackles and he has no anticipation. I heard the announcer give Marley credit for at least 2 tackles that Bible and/or Ingram actually made. He's all show and no go. Pay closer attention when they play Stephenvile you'll see what I'm talking about. Taylor Bible is the leader on defense in his play and his maturity. Hopefully Marley will follow Bible's leadership.
