BREAKING NEWS: The DR-C 5-4A football preview curse

Well, it's happened. Just like the Sports Illustrated curse or the Madden curse, we've apparently started our own here, unfortunately.

Guyer quarterback J.W. Walsh, who was on the cover of our 5-4A section of the football preview section has been knocked out for a considerable amount of time after suffering further damage to his elbow that was injured in summer 7-on-7 play.

The sophomore, and son of head coach John Walsh, was in excruciating pain after last Thursday's win over Carrollton Newman Smith, in which he completed 5 of 9 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 94 yards on nine carries and a touchdown in his varsity starting debut.

The injury is to a ligament in his elbow and the growth plate in his elbow. His ligaments are 100 percent healthy. He will be in a cast for a couple of weeks, through Guyer's open week and then will hopefully return 2-3 weeks after that, presumably in the middle of district play.

This is a huge blow to Guyer, not so much for the actual level of play as it was known that he wasn't 100 percent as far as throwing the ball goes even before this latest injury, but more because of his understanding of Guyer's offense and all the reads and checks he can make at the line of scrimmage that the Wildcats' other quarterbacks simply can't make yet.

Guyer will have Marquis Smith, who is a starting cornerback, and inside receiver Luke Russell taking snaps in Friday's game at Stephenville. Russell played quarterback as a freshman at Lake Dallas and Smith was Guyer's backup last season.

Either way, the Wildcats will lose either a quality cornerback (they already have an injured starter in Chuks Orabuchi) or their best receiver and most versatile offensive player (Russell).

How badly will this affect Guyer's chances of having a turnaround season this year? Will the Wildcats be able to recover in time once they get Walsh back and everyone else back to their best positions? It should be interesting to see.

Luke Russell was at Guyer as a freshman not at Lake Dallas.

John's right. I got mixed up since Luke's sister, Leah, was at Lake Dallas that year. Regardless, Luke has experience at quarterback.

We will be fine. Marquis has a good accurate arm and is a heck of a runner. Luke needs to stay at the slot to execute the many packages in place for him. However, he will toss a few also.
That said, Adam, no more pictures of Guyer players!!
