September 2, 2008We've heard throughout the summer that Guyer's defense would be much improved this season, especially in the secondary. Before we address any of this, let's keep in mind that Carrollton Newman Smith is no offensive juggernaut, having gone 1-9 last season in 5A, just as Guyer did in 4A last year as a newer program. After giving up just one offensive touchdown to the Trojans on Thursday, the Wildcats have reason to be excited about their defense. The entry "Guyer defense for real?" has no entry tags. Ryan's linebackers did pretty well in the Raiders' 48-30 win over Mesquite Poteet on Thursday. Jake Strickland led the team in tackles (12), followed by Peyton Whitlock (11) and sophomore stud Ty Hook (10). Those three starters were great, and Hook looked comfortable in his first varsity game. Strickland added a sack and Hook had a pass deflection. Also in the mix was run-stuffer Colby Boliver, who had nine tackles. The entry "Raider linebackers shine" has no entry tags. Make that three former Ryan defensive linemen in the National Football League. Derek Lokey didn't make the Kansas City Chiefs' 53-man roster, but did make the practice squad, which will give him a chance to make the roster down the line. Lokey joins Denver's Jarvis Moss and Jacksonville's Brian Smith in the NFL. In other Lokey news, Taylor Lokey played in his first game with Stephen F. Austin, but didn't get a reception. The entry "Lokey makes Chiefs practice squad" has no entry tags. |
