Guyer practice report: Day 2

So, just got back from another day out at Guyer's football practice and spent a good hour or so out there today.

As for my questions yesterday, I think a few of them had some light shed on them, most notably the one about wide receivers. Despite all the hubbub (sorry, I like that word) about some of Guyer's crew of wideouts (Austin Otto, Daniel Harkins, Matt Mose, etc.) there's no question who the most dangerous receiver will be this year.

That title belongs to one Luke Russell, whose sister Leah led Guyer to a playoff win in girls basketball back in February. Think their parents were Star Wars fans or was it just a coincidence? I like to think yes, but moving on...

Russell will get his hands on the ball "at least a dozen times a game" at least that's what John Walsh told me, and I get the feeling it's kind of his decision. He'll line up primarily in the slot and go in motion a lot, lending the opportunities for reverses. He'll also play some quarterback in certain packages. That's where he was apparently in line to play at Lake Dallas before his controversial transfer to Guyer. I say "controversial" because, well, it was, but everyone must remember it went to the UIL and nothing more came of it.

Anyway, I'm off to watch some Olympics now (Go Michael Phelps!) but I'll leave you with this funny little tidbit.

Guyer senior running back Deandre Wilson, who will be one of the emotional, and physical, leaders of the offense was observing some plays being run when an assistant coach playfully tossed a ball at the senior, who makes a living as a receiver out of the backfield.

The usually trusty-handed Wilson must've not seen it because the ball hit Wilson right in...well...a part of the body men don't like to be hit in. He was down on the turf for a few minutes drawing some cheap laughs from teammates and some female trainers. But in the end, he was OK, has he did one of those sweet kick up things where you arch your back and kick up and pop up on your feet. Good to see he was OK as a fellow male.

Russell is very talented, but if JW cannot get healthy he will probably be the QB. They have been working him there some.

Russell, although talented, would NOT be the QB at Lake Dallas.

JEALOUS..... and Coach Walsh will show everyone how good this team is and will be. Fact is Lake Dallas is going to get to see how weak their District really was once they come to the real side of a football District and get to Face the Denton Ryans and Witchita Falls Rider's of the area. GUYER's future is bright just wait and see. I am looking forward to how this whole thing shakes out...just wait and see.
