August 28, 2008Scotty Young with more than 400 passing yards. The entry "Final: 48-30 Ryan" has no entry tags. The senior fullback went 21 yards up the middle as Guyer was just trying to kill the clock to put the Wildcats up 31-14 with 47 seconds remaining. Guyer has its second win in history. The entry "Deandre Wilson ends it" has no entry tags. Yahshua Williams just took an interception 81 yards for a touchdown. That guy is fast. He wasn't touched, and he was heads up enough to slow down when he needed blockers. Ryan's up 41-10 with 2:37 left in the third quarter. The entry "Yahshua shows why he's Division I" has no entry tags. Jamaine WIlhite just took a run 11 yards up the middle and dragged three defenders the final three yards to give Guyer a 24-7 lead with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter. It appears this game might be over as it shouldn't even really be this close. Deandre Wilson appears to be OK as well as he was about to run in on that last play but stayed on the sideline. The entry "Looks like those RBs are OK, Guyer scores" has no entry tags. The Wildcats defense forced a three-and-out and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Trojans gave Guyer the ball at the NS 39-yard line. J.W. Walsh took the first play 21 yards on a keeper and then Deandre Wilson went five yards and was banged up. Now Guyer has its two starting RBs hurt on the last two drives. Still, a score here could end the game. The entry "Guyer in striking distance again" has no entry tags. This time on a 56-yard screen pass to running back Deandre Wilson, who is probably Walsh's favorite receiver aside from Russell. The senior rumbled basically untouched but broke one tackle at the 20-yard line before diving in over some other tacklers. The play before, Jaimaine Wilhite injured his shoulder apparently when he was grounded in the backfield by Jacori Greer, who has been an absolute monster for Newman Smith. Guyer leads 17-7 with 5:30 left in the third. The entry "Walsh strikes again" has no entry tags. Mesquite Poteet had a nice drive going at the end of the second quarter there, but Cooper Jackson intercepted a Jacob Sutton pass to end the half. Ryan leads 34-10. Here are some quick stats. Shouldn't be too hard to tell who's winning just looking at them: Ryan has 321, Poteet 112 yards of total offense. Scotty Young is 15-for-24 for 273 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Six different Raiders have a reception led by D.J. Beshears with four for 78 and two touchdowns. 13 of Ryan's 32 plays have gone for 10 yards or more. Can we say vicious beat-down? The entry "Halftime stats" has no entry tags. So far tonight, Russell has three carries on reverses for 51 yards, a catch for two yards and just overthrew a WIDE OPEN Austin Otto on a sure touchdown on a reverse pass. He'll be a dynamic player for Guyer this year. The entry "Luke Russell = Jack of all trades" has no entry tags. Now Ryan leads 21-3 after a 19-yard strike on a slant route from Scotty Young to Antonio Anderson. Beshears set up the score with an amazing punt return. This could get ugly, guys. Poteet isn't moving the ball at all, and Ryan is moving at will. The entry "Young to Anderson for score" has no entry tags. Ryan leads 14-3 after the first quarter and the Raiders have to be happy. D.J. Beshears has been electric with two touchdowns and a 33-yard punt return. Poteet has five total yards offensively, and Ryan is in the red zone again ... The entry "End of first in Mesquite" has no entry tags. The Wildcats just had a serious goal line stand when on fourth-and-goal from the one-inch line, Trojan QB Aldo Quiroga tried a naked bootleg keeper around the left end and Guyer LB Ravion Ingram met him four yards behind the line to stop the Trojans. Score still stands at 3-0, Guyer. The entry "HUGE defensive stand" has no entry tags. A 47-yard bomb from Scotty Young to James Johnson set up a 15-yard strike from Young to D.J. Beshears to put Ryan up 14-3. The pass was a little high, but Beshears went up, pulled it down and hauled it in for the score. The entry "Young to Beshears -- again" has no entry tags. After a great punt return that set them up on Ryan 21-yard line, the Pirates are on the board with a 32-yard field goal. After completing his first three passes, Scotty Young is 0-4. The entry "Poteet on the board" has no entry tags. Guyer had to settle for a 23-yard Sam Alspach field goal. That holding penalty could end up being huge. The worst part is, it was completely pointless. The entry "Wildcats on the board" has no entry tags. Guyer appeared to get on the board first on a 21-yard option keeper by quarterback J.W. Walsh, but the Wildcats were called for a hold at the 1-yard line, pushing them back to the 11-yard line. It's now 2nd down at the 8. The entry "Touchdown negated" has no entry tags. D.J. Beshears, lined up at running back, caught a 55-yard bomb from Scotty Young to put Ryan up 7-0 after its first play of the game. Maurice Young had a good kick return to set Ryan up. The entry "Ryan scores on opening play" has no entry tags. After allowing a few big plays to Newman Smith, Guyer cornerback Marquis Smith picked off a Aldo Quiroga pass at the Guyer 6-yard line and returned it to the 13. On the second play, Luke Russell took a reverse 28 yards for a first down. Guyer is now driving... The entry "Guyer defense comes up big" has no entry tags. MLB Cody Marley, DT Spencer Wilson, OT Kyle Clark, OT Jesse Coffey Newman Smith wins the toss and will receive. Let's see if that Guyer defense has really improved as much as we're hearing. The entry "Guyer 2008 captains" has no entry tags. I just got settled here in Mesquite and like Boedeker, I'm chomping at the bit to see a football game that matters. Hanby Stadium is a beautiful facility and while I'm partial to Denton's own C.H. Collins Athletic Complex, Mesquite has a stadium to be proud of here on the campus of Mesquite High School. Keep checking in for updates on the game, which is 20 minutes from kickoff. Because my good friend Tom has been texting me all day for score prediction, here it is: Ryan 34, Poteet 20 Also, if you're thinking about getting the wireless modem from AT&T, DON'T. It's way over-priced, the service is spotty and best, and it takes five minutes of jacking around with it just to get it to work in the first place. I got it so I could blog from anywhere. I'm using Mesquite ISD's Internet service tonight ... The entry "Live from E.H. Hanby Stadium in Mesquite" has no entry tags. We're an hour and five minutes from kickoff, and here's my first live blog entry of the football season. I'm watching Guyer's pre-game warmups right now and one thing strikes me as far as matchups go. As I mentioned in the DR-C today, Newman Smith has two college-level defensive ends in Jacori Greer and Dontreyl Beckham. What I failed to mention (didn't forget, just failed to mention) is that Guyer happens to have two offensive tackles who have committed to Big 12 schools in Kyle Clark (Texas Tech) and Jesse Coffey (Nebraska). The entry "Man, am I ready for football!" has no entry tags. According to the DR-C High School Blog's good friend Tom, making a predication, even when it's, like, your job, is to make an [expletive] of yourself. Rather than dissect why that may be the most ridiculous statement ever uttered on this blog, I'll just succumb: I am an [expletive] for doing my job. Here are my predictions for 2008 in 5-4A, 100 percent guaranteed more accurate than Boedeker's: The entry "5-4A Predictions: Andrews Edition" has no entry tags. |
