August 12, 2008So, just got back from another day out at Guyer's football practice and spent a good hour or so out there today. As for my questions yesterday, I think a few of them had some light shed on them, most notably the one about wide receivers. Despite all the hubbub (sorry, I like that word) about some of Guyer's crew of wideouts (Austin Otto, Daniel Harkins, Matt Mose, etc.) there's no question who the most dangerous receiver will be this year. That title belongs to one Luke Russell, whose sister Leah led Guyer to a playoff win in girls basketball back in February. Think their parents were Star Wars fans or was it just a coincidence? I like to think yes, but moving on... Russell will get his hands on the ball "at least a dozen times a game" at least that's what John Walsh told me, and I get the feeling it's kind of his decision. He'll line up primarily in the slot and go in motion a lot, lending the opportunities for reverses. He'll also play some quarterback in certain packages. That's where he was apparently in line to play at Lake Dallas before his controversial transfer to Guyer. I say "controversial" because, well, it was, but everyone must remember it went to the UIL and nothing more came of it. The entry "Guyer practice report: Day 2" has no entry tags. I'm at Frisco High School covering Ryan's opener against Plano Prestonwood and Frisco. The Lady Raiders are playing Prestonwood right now and Frisco afterward, which is what I'm covering. So how are the Lady Raiders doing against Plano's most privileged and provided for little girls? They are hanging in there, although you can tell Prestonwood has recruited some very athletic players. Anyway, I'm ready to reveal my District 5-4A predictions for the 2008 season. Here's who I think will make the playoffs. The entry "Volleyball season underway" has no entry tags. |
