Petersen makes pro debut

Curtis Petersen officially has a professional baseball career.

The former Ryan Raider took the mound for the first time with the Marlins GCL on Sunday, pitching two innings of relief in the 6-5 win.

I'm sure Curt will be anxious to get a second crack at it. He gave up two runs off two hits and two walks, but, in typical fashion, struck out four. His career earned-run average stands at 9.00. Don't worry, Curt. We know that will come down quickly ...

So, I think it's time we gave Curtis a suitable nickname. I was thinking something like The Force or The Heat. Maybe Striker. Anybody have any suggestions?

Mr. Peterson will have success at the lower levels due to inexperienced hitters and wooden bats..He has a plus breaking ball, but he will have to develop a third pitch to move up in their organization. 86-87 Fastball will not cut it so his command had better improve drasticly...He got his money on his ceiling, 6'4 rangy frame that can hold 20+ pounds and potential for a lively arm, but only time will tell..In my opinion $350,000 is not worth what he gave up. after taxes there is hardly anything left..go to school get 3 years under your belt and if you improve the $$$ will still be there.. yes some will say you risk injury well guess what, if you get injured at school you have the opportunity to continue your school and get better...if you have a major injury in pro ball, it all depends on what the organization has tied up in you, plus health is not guaranteed.he took a big chance not going to Nebraska...I hope it works out for him....

I honestly don't know when you watched Curtis Petersen throw, but in his professional debut, Curtis was 90-93 with excellent movement. Watching him play for these past years, and even hitting against him, I have found that he has 4 pitches that he will use at times. He has an above average slider, along with a change up that has the bottom drop out of it right as it gets to the plate, as well as his 90+ fastball and sharp curveball. I completely agree with his decision to take the money; He was, afterall, taken in the 4th round. There isn't too much more room to improve from there. And the team that took him, has consistantly given young players their shots, and then got them out of there for more young prospects. The Florida Marlins are a VERY young team, and that is just how they operate. Expect to see him with his Major League debut in the next couple of years.

YOUR CRAZY!!!!! 90-93 I haven't seen it and I saw him throw multiple times at the end of the year.. Sat with a good friend of mine who scouts for the tigers, he was 85-87 topped out at 88.. No doubt that he has a plus hammer (already noted) but he was on 6 days rest and gave up 9 hits to one of the worst teams in the area. If you throw low 90's with an above avg. slider, change, and a hammer that as you say "the bottom falls out" that doesn't happen...And by the way since you have no clue on the value of picks in the major league draft. The Marlins stole Peterson, $350K is not 4th round Jack....I personally know 2 individuals taken in the 8th and 11th rd. 8th got offered $250K and 11th $128K...So yes he can do better and I will bet the farm he doesn't make it to the BIGS!!! He will be a lifer in the minors and sometime around his 30th B-Day he will ask himself "Why am I still in AA..." "I should have asked for more $$$" "University of Nebraska sounds pretty good right about now."

OUT!!!!!

You're right, I have no clue what I'm talking about. Did I mention that the Marlins are one of the cheapest teams in baseball? He had his price at $350K before he had any idea where he was going to get picked, if he got picked. I'd take that bet with you, there will be a Curtis Petersen Major League debut. You can think what you want about Curt's ability to pitch, but keep an eye on him, because he has always been one to go out and prove people wrong. Which team did you see him throw against? Mesquite Poteet, the #2 ranked team in the state is the only team that I remember getting 9 hits off of him, and if you paid attention at that game, then you would've realized that they had more "broken bat singles" than we had fall in all season. There was one ball hit hard against him in that game, and it was by UT bound JT Files. I'm not saying that he didn't have days to where he didn't have his best stuff, thats just baseball. I talked with Curtis personally the day that he debuted, and he was 90-93. He is the real deal, I have signed to play collegiate baseball, and Curtis is the best pitcher that I have faced. End of story. You obviously don't know how hard he works if you think he'll still be stuck in AA. You must be crazy, seriously.
