The University Interscholastic League finalized plans on Tuesday afternoon to move the 2015 girls and boys state basketball tournaments to San Antonio’s Alamodome.

The UIL had been playing its state basketball tournaments in Austin since 1921, and they have been played at the Frank Erwin Center at the University of Texas at Austin since 1978.

There was a lot of talk about the UIL moving the tournament after increased grumblings from coaches and spectators regarding the boys basketball tournament, which was scheduled in Austin during the same time as the South By Southwest Music and festival in Austin.

In June, the UIL announced at its Legislative Council meeting that discussions were in place with the Alamodome. The move became official on Tuesday afternoon.

“The decision to move the basketball state tournaments has been a difficult one,” UIL executive director Charles Breithaupt said in a release. “The tournaments have enjoyed a rich tradition in Austin, but in order to provide the best experience for student-athletes, coaches and fans, it is best to move the UIL basketball state tournaments to another excellent venue in Texas, the San Antonio Alamodome.”

The 2015 girls state tournament is scheduled for March 5 to March 7, while the boys tournament is slated for March 12 to March 14.
