Former Sherman head coach Gary Joe Kinne hired as Denton assistant coach

Denton High added another high profile assistant to its football coaching staff this summer.

Gary Joe Kinne has accepted an offer to join the Broncos, according to Denton ISD spokesperson Sharon Cox.

Kinne was previously the head coach at Sherman for five years and led the Bearcats to the postseason in four of those five seasons. He compiled a record of 41-18 at Sherman before he resigned in January.

Kinne had a tumultuous final season in 2013. He was suspended for one game and placed on two-year probation by the University Interscholastic League for violating rules regarding non-school participation.

The new Denton assistant also made national headlines in 2005 when a parent shot him while he was the head coach at Canton, where he brought the program its first playoff win since 1964.

Denton head coach Kevin Atkinson is quietly putting together a strong coaching staff as he enters his third season with the Broncos. Atkinson hired former North Texas quarterback Derek Thompson earlier this summer.
