Argyle Class of 2016 TE J.C. Chalk commits to Clemson

J.C. Chalk might have a while to go before he graduates from Argyle, but the Class of 2016 tight end already knows where he’s going to play college football.

On Wednesday afternoon, Chalk announced his oral commitment to Clemson.

The Argyle tight end turned down early offers from Arizona State, Colorado State and Duke after he was swayed by the Tigers during his visit to South Carolina this week.

“Me and my parents have been praying about it for a long time, where I wanted to go and where I’d be a best fit,” Chalk said. “We talked to [Chad] Morris and Clemson [tight ends coach Danny] Pearman, and I felt like when we were talking to them at a certain point, this is where I need to go. Why not eliminate all the other schools and distractions and be totally in with Clemson?”

Chalk, the grandson of legendary college football head coach Gene Stallings, also visited Baylor, Texas and Texas A&M this summer.

Morris, Clemson’s offensive coordinator, visited Argyle earlier this spring when he came to offer the 6-foot-4 prospect that had four catches for 63 yards for Argyle in the postseason.

Chalk said his former teammate and current Texas Tech freshman wide receiver, Ian Sadler, talked to Chalk on the phone and wanted him to visit Lubbock after Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury expressed interest.

Chalk was at wide receiver for the Eagles, but he eventually outgrew the position and made the switch to tight end.

He said he was impressed with Clemson’s coaching staff and how they also catered to Chalk’s development off the field, something that helped Chalk make his decision early.

“I agree completely with that, and I just want to get on board,” Chalk said. “I’m really excited about it.”
