Argyle’s J.C. Chalk picks up offer from Clemson

Argyle sophomore tight end J.C. Chalk picked up an offer from Clemson on Wednesday. Chalk now holds offers from the Tigers and Arizona State

Argyle’s J.C. Chalk still has a few weeks left in his sophomore year, but he’s already getting some heavy interest from big-time college football programs.

Clemson became the second school to offer the Class of 2016 tight end when the Tigers offered the Argyle sophomore on Tuesday. Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris dropped by the Argyle field house yesterday to visit with Chalk and present him with the offer.

“I was pretty excited,” Chalk said. “I wasn’t really expecting it. I went to their camp my freshmen year, and they kind of said they were interested in me but I wasn’t expecting much.”

Chalk picked up his first offer from Arizona State early in March.

The sophomore said he’s being recruited to be a route-running tight end, which is what he did well for the Eagles during their run to the Class 3A Division II state championship.

Argyle head coach Todd Rodgers said Chalk stepped up after senior Sam Sizelove suffered a season-ending injury. Chalk had four catches for 63 yards in six playoff games.

Chalk, who is 6-foot-4, essentially became too tall to be a wide receiver and he was more than willing to move to tight end, where he was productive for the Eagles.

Chalk said he wants to go to a program that uses the tight end effectively, and he doesn’t plan on making a decision until after his junior year. The sophomore said Texas Tech and TCU have both expressed interest but have not offered.

Rodgers said he hopes Chalk will definitely be a key part of Argyle’s offense for the next two years.

“If we’re going to be as effectively as we want to be, I think without a doubt he has to play a very important role in blocking, play-action pass, and he’s such a big threat for the quarterback to work with,” Rodgers said.

If Chalk keeps improving and growing, he will have a slew of offers by this time next year. It also does not hurt when you are the grandson of Gene Stallings (yes, that Gene Stallings).
