Guyer kicker goes viral with pact

The power of Twitter is pretty amazing. And there couldn’t be a cooler school district to follow on Twitter than @DentonISD. They’re all business, except for when they party. And while they do keep it professional, they also like the occasional bit.

That’s where Guyer senior kicker Brad Grems comes into play.

In the late-night hours on Monday night, as bridges were icing over causing certain Denton Record-Chronicle sports reporters to endure a two-hour plus drive home from North Richland Hills, Grems was starting a Twitter exchange that will go down in infamy.

Eventually, this ended up on KDGE The Edge’s website and was tweeted out by one of their DJs with 34,000-plus followers on Twitter, ensuring it to go viral. But here’s how it started.

It all started with this at 9:15 p.m., while I was somewhere on Highway 26:

Then, three minutes later, the fine folks at @DentonISD responded:

At 10:04 p.m., Denton ISD tweeted out that school for Tuesday was indeed canceled due to inclement weather. At that point, I was somewhere on 407 about three quarters of the way through my epic journey. At 10:07 p.m., Denton ISD was ready to collect its prize:

So, at 2:19 p.m. on Tuesday, Grems paid his debt, and was surely the butt of many jokes from his classmates, who secretly were thanking him for getting school canceled because the folks at Denton ISD probably really canceled school to see Grems sing (OK, not really).

Grems should probably stick to kicking footballs instead of trying to pursue a career as a wedding singer covering 80s pop classics. Grems was 99-for-102 on extra point attempts and was 5-for-9 on field goal attempts for the back-to-back state champion Guyer football team.

Guyer head coach John Walsh’s response? A simple “Only Grems.”
