When you get to Guyer’s boys basketball area-round game against Everman tonight, you might notice some people missing.
Four Guyer players were dismissed from the team indefinitely after violating team rules: Xavier Brown, Shelton Childress, Bryson Erby and Kason Kilgore, who started in Guyer’s blowout victory against Saginaw on Tuesday and held the Rough Riders’ leading scorer to zero points.
With only seven available players, head coach Grant Long will employ some familiar faces in guard DJ Breedlove and forward Jerrod Heard, who of course, are more known for their exploits on the football field but both saw starting time as sophomores and juniors on the basketball team. The two will suit up for tonight’s game, after previously deciding not to play basketball this season, against No. 13 Everman (24-3) and be ready to go. Though, the question of whether they’re in basketball shape will be a big one. However, each should be able to provide 3- or 4-minute spurts off the bench of standout defense, if nothing else.
The Wildcats (18-10) will likely miss Kilgore the most, as he’s provided lockdown defense on a regular basis and was going to be integral in helping contain Everman’s standout guards. Childress has provided nice spark off the bench and is one of the team’s better three-point shooters. Erby has played backup minutes at point guard, and Brown has provided another big body inside behind Josh Jordan and Gordon Hill.
