Halftime thoughts: Ryan 27, Colleyville Heritage 14

GRAPEVINE – We’re at halftime here at Mustang-Panther Stadium. Ryan leads Colleyville Heritage 27-14 in this Class 5A Division II Region I bi-district game.

Judging by the score, you’d think Ryan has looked pretty good in the first half.

Don’t be misled. Ryan has produced some big plays on special teams and defense to take the lead over the Panthers.

Reese Strait has a 32-yard fumble return for a touchdown, and Tederick Williams has a 9-yard punt return for a touchdown in the game.

Colleyville has three turnovers, including two by QB Griffin Pickler.

Heritage suffered two more injuries on the offensive line this game, which could potentially leave the Panthers without four of their five starting offensive linemen. I haven’t seen if they have came back yet.

Heritage has outgained Ryan 176-153, if that tells you anything.

Ryan’s really been unable to have any sustained drives. One of its offensive touchdowns came on a 73-yard pass from Mitchell Bridges to Trent Willis. The other touchdown came on a reverse pass from Xavier Gray to Bridges.

Other than that, the Ryan offense hasn’t looked great.

But the Raiders’ saving grace has been its defense. Pickler hasn’t looked great throwing the ball, but he’s been able to avoid Ryan’s pressure for the most part, minus a few costly sacks.
