Argyle senior Reese Thompson decided he didn’t need to take another college visit before he realized where he wanted to continue his athletic career.
Thompson orally committed to Texas on a track and field scholarship late Tuesday night. Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day a Class of 2014 track and field athlete can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 5, 2014.
The senior said he received offers from Texas A&M, Arkansas, Texas Tech and Kansas State. Thompson said he was going to visit Kansas State, but no longer feels the need to do so after he made his commitment.
“I love how well I fit in with the team down there, and then everything they had to offer and the opportunities I’ll have on the track team, in academics and outside of school as well,” Thompson said. “I think they have everything that I need to perform at a high level.”
Thompson’s former teammate, Spencer McCloud, is currently participating in the high jump at Texas. Looks like Thompson won’t have to worry about finding a roommate next year.
The senior has flourished as a defensive back on Argyle’s football team that’s ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Associated Press.
Thompson’s commitment means Argyle has five athletes with big-time scholarships (Thompson; Sam Sizelove, Kansas State; Connor Wilson, Texas Tech; Ian Sadler, Texas Tech; Cole Hedlund, Arkansas).
That’s unreal. I’m sure any coach across the state would love to have that at his disposal.
