What you need to know: Wylie East

Ryan senior Xavier Gray and the rest of the Raiders will look to avenge a 2012 loss to Wylie East.

Remember last week when I said the starters weren’t going to be resting in the third quarter against Wichita Falls Rider?

Yeah, that turned out to be completely wrong.

The Ryan Raiders have steamrolled Corsicana and Rider in the season’s first two games. The only thing stopping Ryan from its first three-game winning streak since 2011 are the Wylie East Raiders.

Ryan enters Friday night’s matchup looking to avenge last season’s three-point loss to Wylie East last season.

Ryan (2-0) at Wylie East (1-1), 7:30 p.m., Wylie Stadium

Series Record: Ryan leads 1-0

What happened last time: Last season, Ryan was without quarterback Mitchell Bridges and lost a late lead to Wylie East in a 34-31 loss. The Raiders were outgained by Wylie East 528 to 335. Last season, East had some strong receivers in Marcell Ateman (Oklahoma State) and Vequan Jones (Baylor).

Ateman had eight catches for 92 yards, while Jones had three catches for 38 yards and a touchdown. Jabari Anderson killed Ryan with his rushing attack. Anderson had 36 carries for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Anderson scored the game winning touchdown with 5:38 left in the game.

What to look forward to this year:  The two teams look completely different this season. Bridges is healthy and East is without their three main offensive weapons. However, East still has quarterback Garrett McCain, who threw for 203 yards last year.

McCain helped East picked up its first win of the season last week in a 42-20 win over Frisco Liberty. McCain went 19 of 27 for 290 yards and three touchdowns.

Last week, Ryan’s secondary passed a  big test against Chase London and Rider. It also helps when the defensive line generates pressure all night. East couldn’t run the ball last week. Kevon Mack had a team-high 16 carries for a mere 40 yards, and Mack certainly won’t have it easy this week. Wylie East senior DB Jordan Wyatt has committed to SMU

Once again, it’ll come down to Ryan stopping an opposing team through the air. If that can happen and the Raiders can run the ball effectively, it’ll be another short week for the starters.
