The Fantastic Four: No.1 Guyer vs. Tyler John Tyler

Behind its rushing attack and quarterback Jerrod Heard, the Guyer Wildcats defeated Tyler John Tyler in the 4A DI semifinals and made for the top game of 2012. (David Minton/Denton Record-Chronicle)

When the inception of this list occurred, there was no competition for the top game of 2012.

Guyer and Tyler John Tyler’s Class 4A Division I state football semifinal should go down as the best playoff game of the year and regarded as one of the best Texas high school football games to have been played.

If you haven’t heard the story yet, I’ll give you a short synopsis of what went down.

Guyer lead 50-31 in the fourth quarter and John Tyler was moments away from packing up and heading back to East Texas. And then the Lions and their CUJO Nation magic reeled off 22 points in 74 seconds.

Yes. 22 points in 74 seconds. When those 74 seconds had elapsed, John Tyler was now leading 53-50, something that was inconceivable minutes earlier. Tyler took the lead after recovering back-to-back onside kicks and following the recoveries with touchdowns, making for one of the most historic comebacks made by a team.

Guyer refused to be toppled by what had just occurred. The Wildcats took another drive down the field and scored on a Richard Whitaker 18-yard run, putting Guyer ahead 57-53 and closing the scoring in a fourth quarter where both teams averaged a touchdown every 80 seconds.

There’s not much more that needs to be said after that.

Here’s Adam Boedeker’s story for the game and here’s what I filed after the chaotic fourth quarter. Many in the press box said that was the best football game they had ever seen, and it’s hard to say otherwise.
