To make matters much more difficult for the Raiders today against Coppell, Ryan will be starting fourth-string quarterback Kevin Ray against one of the best defenses in the state.
Ray took over on the first drive of the second half of last week’s 28-24 comeback win over Lewisville. Junior starting quarterback Mitchell Bridges left the game with a serious right knee injury and will be out for at least this week, if not longer.
Backups Xavier Gray (ankle) and Preston Compton (illness) will also be out for this week, leaving Ray in charge of Ryan’s offense.
Last week, Ray went 5 of 8 for 64 yards in the win where he received the game-ball and his perseverance paid off. Ray was Ryan’s JV quarterback and was moved to wide receiver when he was bumped up to varisty, something Ryan head coach Joey Florence said didn’t settle well with Ray.
Ryan used a lot of short passes and heavy dose of junior running back Tyrone Williams for the win last week. I’m sure Williams will see plenty of carries against Coppell, along with fellow running back A.J. Anderson.
Unfortunately for Ray, he’ll be facing a defense that allowed 75 total yards to Hebron in a 29-3 win on Oct. 12. Granted, that was without Hebron’s star running back Dezmond Wortham, but it’s still an impressive accomplishment. It’ll be interesting to see how Ryan’s offense adapts to Ray as the quarterback.
