For the first time in what has to be a long, long time, Ryan, Guyer and Lake Dallas all lost in the same week. Those three teams were in the top three spots in the power rankings last week. But since they all lost and Argyle completely dominated Fort Worth Nolan, the Eagles claimed the No.1 spot for this week.
Ranking (previous week’s ranking)
1. Argyle (4). Last week: d. Fort Worth Nolan, 28-7
Argyle bumps up to No.1 because the Eagles looked pretty impressive against the defending TAAPS Division I state champions. And Ian Sadler didn’t look like he was coming off of ACL surgery. He looked like a kid who gave Nolan fits and scored a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a punt return touchdown. Argyle faces Paris, the defending District 15-3A champs, this week.
2. Ryan (1). Last week: lost to Wichita Falls Rider, 21-15.
Ryan probably should have won that game against Rider last week, but Ryan didn’t and doesn’t drop too far in the “rankings” because Guyer and Lake Dallas got throttled by two really good teams. Since Ryan’s not as talented as it has been in years past, the first two games have been really exciting. I’m still waiting to see how Ryan does against 5A competition. I’ll be waiting until Sept. 28 when Ryan plays McKinney.
3. Guyer (2). Last week: lost to Colleyville Heritage, 54-38.
Well, it looks like my alma mater is doing what it does best – winning in the regular season before losing in the first round of the playoffs. In a battle of future Red River rivals, Oklahoma-bound Heritage QB Cody Thomas outshined Texas-bound Guyer QB Jerrod Heard. A Guyer win this weekend against Flower Mound Marcus (which should happen, since Marcus is without starting quarterback Cole Erwin because he tore his ACL) will keep some of the Wildcats faithful from slipping into a slight panic.
4. Liberty Christian (–). Last week: d. Sanger, 38-6.
Liberty looked really good against a really young and inexperienced Sanger squad that’s been banged up. Liberty won a game despite picking up 289 yards of total offense, which is a testament to the four turnovers Sanger committed and the Warriors’ defense. To Liberty’s credit, it hasn’t lost yet. That might change when the Warriors play Celina this Friday. If Liberty pulls off a win, the Warriors will prove, TAAPS school and all, that they’re to be taken seriously.
5. Lake Dallas (3). Last week: lost to Frisco Centennial, 42-14.
I debated about keeping Krum in the No.5 spot, but since it barely beat Farmersville, that wasn’t going to happen. Pilot Point is 2-0, but the Bearcats beat a Class A team. Basically, there wasn’t much else to do but to have the Falcons hold down the final spot in the power rankings. Granted, they didn’t play an awful game against Frisco Centennial, definitely not 28 points worse than their opponents. But last week wasn’t the best week for the Falcons. I really like Lake Dallas’ defense and think the team definitely can make a solid postseason run. But it’ll take some time to get adjusted to a new offensive and defensive schemes and new key personnel.
