With the release of Dave Campbell’s 2012 Texas Football today, we’ll kick off the breakdowns the magazine has of the area districts, starting with District 5-2A (DI).
Dropping down to 2A this season is Pilot Point and Whitesboro, two teams formerly in District 9-3A. Pilot Point has won three state championships in school history, all in 2A. Its last title was in 2009, which was prior to its brief jump up to Class 3A.
Pilot Point struggled last season, and a move to 2A may tremendously help the Bearcats. DCTF has Pilot Point finishing second in the district, with Bowie winning the district.
Projected order of finish:
- Bowie
- Pilot Point
- Boyd
- Whitesboro
- Callisburg
- Paradise
- Ponder
Ponder is entering its third year of varsity football with new head coach Russ Phillips. Phillips takes over for Rubin Covington, who barely missed the playoffs with the Lions last season. With nine returning starters on both sides of the ball, Ponder could make a push for one of the final playoff spots.
Pilot Point will undoubtedly be much more competitive next season in a much weaker district, and if the DCTF pre-season picks hold true, Pilot Point would play 6-2ADI’s Pottsboro in the first round of the playoffs. With the likes of linebacker Beau Ewton and sophomore quarterback Travis Garrett returning, the Bearcats could be destined for a playoff appearance.
